Disc Golf maps

Intro

Disc Golf, a sport that people play instead of regular golf.  The goal is to get the disc into a basket like this.   My project was to find these baskets (figure 1) and map the spot with Survey123.

Methods

Step 1 was to download Survey123 onto a smartphone. Actually step 1 is to get a smartphone. After those two steps were completed we need to make the form.

Step 2: Create a form, Here is the form options.

  1. Take photo

  1. Select location

  1. Terrain around basket options:

  1. Urban-ish

  1. Grassland

  1. Woods/hilly

  1. Wood/flat

  1. Grassland/flat

  1. Grassland/hilly

  1. Water hazard

  1. Other

  1. Date/Time

  1. Additional notes

  1. Basket number

What each one means.

  1. Photo-need to see where you stopped at.

  1. -Select location- this was automatically set. When the picture was taken the location was taken automatically.

  2. -Terrain around the basket- this one was to say if there what the land like.

  1. Urban-ish- this one would have been selected if there was just concrete jungle

  1. Grassland- this would have been selected if no trees were around the basket.

  1. Wood/hilly-this one would have been selected if the basket was in a wooded hilly area (or just trees nearby)

  1. Wood/flat-this one would have been selected if the basket was in a wooded flat area (or just trees nearby)

  1. Grassland/flat- this one would have been selected if the basket was in a flat grassy area.

  1. Grassland/hilly his one would have been selected if the basket was in a hilly grassy area.

  1. Water/hazard- if the basket was not in water.

  1. Other- was whatever not listed above.

  1. -Date/time-this was automatically set by my phone. This was stamped to show the time of day this picture was taken and the date the picture was taken.

  1. -Additional notes-if anything else was needed to be said, it was included here.

  1. Basket number- this was the number of the basket on the course. Not particularly in order on the course. Just the number of the basket.

Fieldwork

For the field data section, I had to pick two courses. Wakanda Park in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and the UW-Eau Claire Disc golf course.  Those two were picked because the UWEC one is close by and Wakanda park had a cool name.

Results

Figure 2 shows the baskets at the UW-Eau Claire.

Figure 2

Figure 2a-

This figure shows the walking path from Strava.

Figure 2b-

This map shows the notes taken of the terrain. The most common one was woods/flat.

Figure 2c- This map shows additional notes about the location of the baskets. UW-EC disc golf course is near a big hill.

Figure 2D- This map shows what date the points were taken. 7-9 were taken on the same day as the previous 6, so that was a computer glitch.

Figure 3

Shows the selected baskets at Wakanda Park in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

Figure 3a-

The path that was walked when collecting the data, about 2 ½ miles.

Figure 3b-

This one shows the terrain notes.

Figure 3c-

This map shows the date the points were taken.

Figure 3d-

This map shows Wakanda Parks just adds notes to the baskets.

Discussion

Survey123 works pretty wellIf the operator knows what they are doing. For me, it was pretty easy to use. There were really no problems with Survey123 that were really problematic

Limitations

The limitations are that disc golf courses are 9 to 18 holes, and because of that, I had to use two different courses. The other limitation is Wakanda Park was busy, and the sun was setting, so the project had to stop early. That is why it says there were 18 baskets but there are only 14 points because I had to skip three baskets to beat the sunset.  The project also got behind because the author was playing disc golf to find the baskets and may have or may have not lost a discs in the woods and struggled to find them for a couple of minutes

Conclusion

Survey 123 is a great program to use if you need to collect data quickly yet accurately. This author would highly recommend this program.
